British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The facility, located using surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of approach shafts providing entry to the site... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their courage," he added. "Including them were numerous British personnel deployed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in the country, following an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
