Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that patients who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People buying these drugs need to be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to original mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the drugs explains the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Users who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden return of cravings.

"It felt as if something flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," described an individual.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural support.
