Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Athletes will gain the right to challenge specific calls made by the official, echoing the protocol currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
